Deciding to buy a marimba is a big deal. You will have your instrument for your whole life, so choose carefully! Here are some tips when buying your first marimba: 

How does it sound?
Do you hear warmth and depth and evenness throughout the range of the keyboard? Try out different brands and see which one speaks to your heart. You don't want to hear any rattles, so is there felt between every contact point?

What does your teacher say?
Don't be shy. Talk to your teacher and to other percussionists and ask them which is the best marimba.

Can you adjust the height?
You will likely evolve and find that your playing height can change. How easy is the height-adjustment system? Is it smart engineering?

Is it solid wood?
You don't want to have to buy another marimba in 5 years because of quality issues. Look carefully at how the marimba is designed and constructed. Is is solid wood?

How about service?
Your new marimba is home! Now do you have the service and maintenance that you want? Is the manufacturer caring, friendly and responsive?
