About Us

Marimba One is the most sincere instrument for me. It reacts sensitively to all my emotions and passion. - Mi Youne Kim

Mi Youne Kim

Born in Seoul, Korea in 1980, Mi Youne Kim captivates listeners with her exuberant and heartwarming music.

Mi Youne began percussion at the age of 16; soon after, as a freshman in the Music Faculty of Chung Ang University, Mi Youne Kim played as newcomers' representative. She entered at the Academic Percussion Ensemble - the leading percussion group in Korea - playing regularly with the Chung Ang University Percussion Ensemble, and performing at the university alumni association. Mi Youne was selected for excellence among the university graduating students by the Kook Min Daily News, following a successful concert which also brought her an invitation to play in the New Generation Musicians Concert series.

In Paris, Mi Youne studied with Frederec Macarez and Eric Sammut at the Conservatoire Superieur de Paris-CNR, from which she graduated with the First Prize. Two months before graduation, she won an audition at the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra with maestro Myung-Whun Chung, and joined it as a percussionist member. Following in 2007, Mi Youne won the Universal Marimba Competition and Festival held in Belgium. In addition to the First Prize, she won the competition's Public Prize and the Best Performance Prize, turning the world's attention to her talents.

Mi Youne is a promising young virtuoso, with recent recitals at PASIC 2007, the International Katarzyna Mycka Marimba Academy in Poland, the Korean Drum Festival (as soloist and member of the Flanders Marimba Masters Ensemble), at the KBS FM Promising Artists' Concert, a New Generation Artists Concert selected by the Association of Music Critics, and at the Journee de la Percussion/PAS France with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Busan Philharmonic Orchestra.

Mi Youne has studied in master classes with Keiko Abe, Ludwig Albert, Mark Ford, R.Van Sice and Momoko Kamiya. Currently, she is in the middle of her postgraduate studies at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp with Ludwig Albert, and is concurrently a member of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Flanders Marimba Masters Ensemble. Mi Youne teaches at Sookmyung Women's University, Kunkook University and the Yum Gwang High School, and at the Marimba Masters Ensemble since 2007.
